Novena to St. Lucy
Protectress of the eyes - Novena Mass in honour of St Lucy

Entrance Hymn:
An increasing number of people seek guidance from prayer, to deepen their spiritual life and grow as a human being before God. Our devotees also seek refuge from the outside world at the Cathedral. Many realise the importance that it is to live a full life, there is also a time to reflect on what we are doing and who we truly are.
O Lord my god, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the work thy hand has made,
I see the stares, I hear the mighty thunder,
The power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, my saviour god to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art,
Then sings my soul, my saviour god to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art,

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim ‘My god, how great thou art’

Dear St Lucy, whose name signifies the light, we come to you full of confidence, and we beseech you to obtain for us a holy light that will make us careful not to walk in the path of sin, nor remain surrounded by the darkness of error. We also ask through your intercession, for the preservation of the light of our eyes and an abundance of grace that we may use our sight according to the divine will without any harm to our souls. Grant, O dear St. Lucy, that after venerating and thanking you for your powerful protection here on earth, we may finally share your joy in Paradise in the eternal light of the Lamb of God, your beloved Bridegroom, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

O God, who gave the world the brightness of the glorious virgin and martyr St. Lucy, grant through her intercession that by loving you with a pure heart we may deserve to possess the wisdom of the saints. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Mass

Penitential Rite:

Lord have mercy//
Christ have mercy//
Lord have mercy//

Search me, O God, and know my heart today,
Try me O saviour, know my thoughts I pray,
See if there be some wicked way in me,
Cleanse me from every sin and set me free.

Lord take my life and make it wholly Thine,
Fill my poor heart with thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion, self and pride,
I now surrender Lord, in my abide

First Reading:
Responsorial Psalm:

As the deer pants for the water,
So my soul longs after you.
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship you.

You alone are my strength, my shield,
To you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship you

I want you more than gold or silver,
Only you can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy-giver,
And the apple of my eye.

You’re my friends and you are my brother,
Even though you are a king
I love you more than any other,
So much more than anything

Alleluia (Sung)

Prayers of Intercession:

Response: Lord graciously hear us.

God our loving Father, St Lucy in time of trial professed your faith and accepted martyrdom, obtain for us the grace to profess the truths of the gospel and to continue in faith according to teachings of your son Jesus. Lord hear us…
Lord God, we pray that our patron St Lucy be the light in our lives and model in every action, so that, after having imitated her in this world we may, with her, rejoice in the vision of god. Lord hear us…

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St Lucy we place our country in your loving hands. May all people understand the need for reconciliation and peace. Obtain for us freedom from harm and danger, and may peace once again be restored. Lord hear us…

Father of mercy, we plead together with our patron St Lucy to touch those who are suffering from want of health in mind and body. Be their safeguard and consolation. Grant them your healing. Lord hear us…

Offertory Hymn:

All to Jesus I surrender
All to him I freely give
I will ever love and trust him,
In his presence daily live

I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to thee, my blessed saviour
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender
Make me Jesus wholly thine.
Let me feel thy holy spirit,
Truly know that thou art mine.

Proclamation: (sung)
Christ has died,
Christ has risen,
Christ will come again.

Our Father (sung)
Our Father in heaven,
Holy be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done
On earth as in heaven

Give us today our daily bread
Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the tes
But deliver us from evil.

Communion Hymn:

I need thee every hour

I need thee every hour most gracious lord,
No tender voice like thine can peace afford.

I need thee, O I need thee,
Every hour I need thee,
O bless me now my saviour,
I come to thee

I need thee every hour stay thou nearby,
Temptations lose power when thou art nigh.

I need thee every hour in joy or pain,
Come quickly and abide or life in vain

I need thee every hour most holy one

O make me thine indeed thou blessed son.

Father I place into your hands

Father I place into your hands
The things I cannot do,
Father I place into your hands
The times I have been through,
Father I place into your hands
The way I should go,
For I know I always can trust you.

Father I place into your hands
My friends and family,
Father I place into your hands
The things trouble me,
Father I place into your hands
The person I should be,
For I know I always can trust you.

Father I want to be with you
And do the things you do,
Father I want to speak the words
That you are speaking too,
Father I want to love the ones
That you will draw to you,
For I know that I am one with you

Post Communion Prayer

Blessing of the sick:

Let us pray:

O Lord, look upon your servants labouring under bodily weakness and cherish and revive our lives created by you; so that purified by these sufferings, we may soon find ourselves healed by your mercy and be able to thank you in your church through Christ our lord. Amen.

Final Blessing

May the Lord Jesus Christ be with you that he may defend you; within you that he may sustain you; before you that he may lead you; behind you that he may protect you; above you that he may bless, in the name of the father, and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Act of Consecration through the Intercession of St Lucy

Graciously hear us O Lord God, light of the world, as we dedicate ourselves to you through your favoured daughter St Lucy whose very name signifies ‘light,’ who died a virgin and martyr, and has been proclaimed by the church as the Protectress of our eyes.

St Lucy, you are the saint of the sightless, the support and strength of the spiritually blind. Today, we consecrate our lives through you to our loving Father, God Almighty.

We honour and praise you as our patroness and protectress, and pray for your care and protection over all of us. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our lord. Amen.

Final Hymn: Hymn to St. Luc

O Holy Martyr, spotless dove,
With joy we celebrate thy day,
Thou dwellest now in bliss above,
Where tyrant over thee has no sway

Sweet Lucy, let thy pleading voice,
For us at mercy’s throne be heard,
Sweet Lucy, let thy pleading voice,
At mercy’s throne be heard.

Oh, pray that we may ever seek,
To be as free as thou from stain,
As constant, fervent, pure and meek,
Regardless of earth’s fleeting pain.

And holy saint, be this thy prayer
That prizing not the world’s renown,
Through trial it may be our care,
To strive but for heavenly crown
